Not illustrated. 1893 Excerpt: ... of the poorer classes, they taking opium in its stead, consequently opium-eating became a widely-spread habit. There are but few of these opium-eaters now remaining, though it is interesting to record the death, at the age of seventy, of one who was in the habit of regularly taking for thirty years, as many as one hundred and twenty grains in every twenty-four hours, of the Turkey opium, containing 12 per cent, of morphine; though during the last few years of her life for the want of money she was able to supply herself with only eighty grains per diem. Another has passed away at the same age who had acquired the same habit to a less degree.--From Dr. Wellington's Annual Report to the U.S.A. of Sutton Bridge. Glass Polishers' Plumbism.--Industries calls attention to the plumbism among workmen engaged in polishing crystal glass. This would appear at first sight to be a harmless occupation, and the name of the polishing material--"tin ashes"--does not suggest any danger of lead poisoning. This, however, consists of a lead stannate. The polishing is done wet, but a portion of the powder dries and creates some dust, which is inhaled by the workman. At Baccarat, in seven years, 39 out of some 200 polishers have suffered from lead poisoning, by the slow cumulative action of the small quantities of poison thus received. Attempts have been made to find a substitute for the "tin ashes." First metastannic acid was tried alone, but was found unsuitable. It was then mixed with half its weight of "tin ashes," the product then containing 20 per cent, of lead instead of 61 per cent., as before.
